The Canadian Experience

The basic elements of the Canadian constitution were framed by the British Parliament through the British North America Act of 1867. The act bestowed on Canada a form of government "similar in principle to that of the United Kingdom".1 As a result, the basic elements of the Westminster system - including a bi-cameral parliament, an elected lower house, cabinet government and ministerial accountability were adopted as Canadian practice.
