Public sector reform has moved on apace since the first of the Commonwealth Public Service Country Profile Series was launched in 1995 when the principles of New Public Management (NPM) were in an early stage of adoption. Staffing the Public Service

In Australia's current population of almost 20 million around half are employed. Of this 10 million, a little over 1.5 million, or around 15 per cent, are employed by government. This public sector workforce is made up of the three levels of government - national (federal or Commonwealth), state and local government - of which the state government workforce is by far the largest at around 73 per cent of the total.
