The best teachers are skilled members of an exacting profession, trained to a high level. Goodwill is a poor substitute for technical competence in teaching; academic ability cannot overcome failures in communication skills. Inadequate teaching can, quite unwittingly, reinforce the pupil's poor self-image or fail to spark his innate abilities, and neither the teacher nor the pupil may ever be aware of the avoidable tragedy caused by professional incompetence.
