The Costs of Education and the Supply of Teachers

Education absorbs a substantial proportion of public expenditure in every country. The amount of public funds devoted to institutionalised formal education frequently reaches five per cent of the gross national product and in some countries may represent more than a quarter of the government's annual recurrent expenditure. In addition to this there are numerous other inputs to education from a range of international aid agencies and foundations, local government authorities, voluntary groups, commerce, industry and private individuals, predominantly parents.
