Examining Spoken English

For centuries the teaching of English in the United Kingdom has been very largely confined to teaching children to write their language and to study its literature from the printed text. Learning to speak their own language has been largely left to chance - the chance of social background. A middle-class house has provided much richer linguistic opportunities than a working-class environment.
