Action Research on Universal Primary Education - An Indian Institute of Education (Poona) Project

In India, national leaders demanded enforcement of compulsory primary education as far back as 1881, drawing their inspiration from the fact of Britain's having done so in 1870. However, it was only after independence that universalisation of primary education was included in policies for national reconstruction. Article 45 of the Directive Principles of the Indian Constitution required universal primary education for the age group 6-14, by the year 1960.
