Banking and Currency

Tables 26.1 and 26.2 show the main monetary changes in Uganda over the past eight years, and the monetary position at the outset of the 1979 war. Government borrowing from the banking system, primarily from the Bank of Uganda, took a steadily increasing share of total domestic credit as the private sector stagnated, tax revenues failed to keep pace with governmental demands, and financial discipline collapsed.
