The Commonwealth Secretariat published the first edition of Commonwealth Organisations in 1977 to meet the need for information about non-governmental activity in the Commonwealth and to promote co-operation among unofficial organisations and between them and the official Commonwealth. The handbook was well received, and a revised edition was published in 1979. This third edition is also completely revised on the basis of information provided by the organisations listed.
