Measuring Family Fuel Consumption

Planning for family fuel saving requires measurement of total family cooking fuel consumption as a basis for comparison. Two simple methods of comparing fuel consumption are described to: (1) test acceptability of a charcoal cooking stove in low-income urban homes; and (2) measure fuel saving produced by woodstoves in rural homes. The charcoal stove offered savings as compared to cooking with electricity and in some cases as compared with wood.
