Economics for Sustainable Development

Although many definitions of sustainable development abound, from the point of view of the sustainability of production a potentially operational definition is maintaining the constancy of natural capital. This definition compares favorably with the ecological concept of ‘resilience’; however, in the presence of natural resource degradation or depletion, the objective of economic efficiency may require modification. The paper demonstrates how a ‘weak’ and ‘strong’ sustainability criterion can be incorporated into cost-benefit analysis.
